The short version
Mountain biking has the friendliest front door of any action sport: school leagues. Middle and high schoolers race cross-country on teams, with volunteer coaches, team tents and a whole lot of cheering. Nobody needs a sponsor, a license or a fancy bike to start. Southern California has two of them, and our explainer on NICA and the SoCal League covers both.
From there, the path runs through USA Cycling races (the national governing body), national championships, junior national teams, the World Cup and the Olympics, where cross-country is the medal event.

The kinds of racing
Mountain biking is really several sports that share a bike.
| Discipline | What it looks like | Bike |
|---|---|---|
| Cross-country (XCO) | Everyone starts together and races several laps of a course with climbs, descents and technical bits. The Olympic event, and the format school leagues race. | Light hardtail or short-travel full suspension |
| Short track (XCC) | About 20 minutes of fast laps on a short loop. Great to watch. | Same as cross-country |
| Marathon (XCM) | One long race, often 60 km or more. | Cross-country bike |
| Enduro | Timed downhill stages linked by untimed climbs. Lowest total time wins. | Mid-travel full suspension, full-face helmet |
| Downhill | One rider at a time down a steep, technical course against the clock, usually at a lift-served bike park. | Downhill bike, full-face helmet, body armor |
| Dual slalom and pump track | Two riders side by side, or timed laps of a rolling pump track. Common at festivals. | Dirt jump or slalom bike |
Most kids start in cross-country because that’s what school leagues race. Kids who light up on the descents often drift toward enduro and downhill later, and Southern California has a lift-served bike park at Snow Summit in Big Bear and a pedal-up park at SkyPark to try it.

Start hereYour school league
Cross-country racing on school or area teams, grades 5 or 6 through 12, with coaches, practices and a season of races. In Southern California that’s The SoCal League, which is independent, or NICA’s Golden State South league.
- Ages
- Middle school and high school
Start here: the school leagues
Team racing for middle and high schoolers, and the reason so many US pros started young.
School mountain biking started in Berkeley in 1998, when a math teacher started a team at Berkeley High. That grew into NICA, the National Interscholastic Cycling Association, which now counts 33 leagues in 31 states for grades 6 through 12 (some leagues start at 5th grade).
Southern California has two leagues
This is the part that confuses everyone, so here it is plainly:
- The SoCal League (socalyouthcycling.org) is the original Southern California high school league, started in 2008, with a middle school program since 2014. It was one of NICA’s founding leagues, left NICA in July 2022 and now runs independently. Grades 6 through 12 race, and kids in K–5 can join to ride. The season runs October to May. It opens with SoCal Shredfest at SkyPark at Santa’s Village on October 17, 2026, and the five races run from February 6–7, 2027 at Lake Perris to the Finals on April 3–4.
- Golden State South (goldenstatesouthmtb.org) is NICA’s newer league for Santa Maria down to San Diego, grades 5 through 12. NICA lists it as founded in 2023, with a first season in 2025. It is a fall league that races weekend “MTB Festivals” from August to October. The last one in 2026 is the Finish Line Festival at Midland School in Los Olivos on October 24–25, and riders can go on to NICA’s Western Regionals in St. George, Utah on November 14–15.
Both race cross-country, both welcome beginners, and both run girls’ and boys’ categories. The right one is usually whichever one your school, or the nearest team, races in. They are separate leagues with separate teams, registration and calendars, so ask the team which one it belongs to.
How the teams work
- School team: riders from one middle or high school.
- Composite team: riders from several schools in one area, for kids whose school doesn’t have a team.
- Independent rider: races on their own, without a team.
Coaches are volunteers, often parents, who complete league training and background checks. If there’s no team near you, starting one is a real option, and the leagues help.
How the races work
Categories differ by league. In the SoCal League, middle schoolers race in three levels and high schoolers race as Freshman, JV1, JV2 and Varsity. In Golden State South, middle schoolers race by grade and high schoolers as JV2, JV1 and Varsity. Either way she moves up as she gets faster, and girls race girls. Races are short. Two laps is typical, and NICA sets lap counts so a middle school race takes no more than 45 minutes. Teams set up tents together in a big pit area, and it feels as much like a festival as a race.
Licenses, categories and moving up
School league racing is covered by your league registration. Most other organized races are sanctioned by USA Cycling and need a license. Here’s what to know:
| Thing | What it means |
|---|---|
| Racing age | Your age on December 31 of this year, all season long. |
| Youth | Racing age 8 and under. |
| Junior | Racing age 9 to 18. Juniors usually race in two-year age groups: 11–12, 13–14, 15–16, 17–18. |
| Beginner one-day license | $15 at sign-up. Covers beginner (Category 3) races. |
| Annual junior (U19) license | $40 a year with auto-renewal, or $60 one-time. |
Categories
Adults climb from Category 3 (beginner) to Category 2, Category 1 and Pro by finishing near the front. Five top-five finishes in Cat 3, in fields of 15 or more, means a mandatory move to Cat 2. Juniors are exempt from forced upgrades for results earned in junior races, so a fast 15-year-old isn’t pushed into adult fields before they’re ready.
What race day looks like
- 1.Register online ahead of time. Most open races use BikeReg, where you can add the one-day license at checkout.
- 2.Pick up a number plate for the handlebars at check-in.
- 3.Pre-ride the course when it’s open, usually the day before or early in the morning. Course riding usually closes once racing starts.
- 4.Line up in your start wave by category, age or grade.
- 5.Race your laps. Parents and coaches can hand up water bottles in the feed zone, following the race’s rules.
- 6.Results, and usually a podium for each category.
What to bring
- Helmet (required whenever a rider is on the bike, even warming up)
- Gloves and glasses
- Two water bottles or a hydration pack, plus snacks
- Spare tube or tubeless plugs, a pump and a multi-tool
- Sunscreen and layers. Mornings are cold and afternoons are hot
- A pop-up tent and chairs if your team doesn’t have a pit spot
For girls
Girls are about a quarter of NICA racers nationwide. NICA’s GRiT program (Girls Riding Together) exists to change that: girls-only rides, clinics, camps and social events, plus a push to recruit more women coaches. Most NICA leagues have a GRiT coordinator. The goal is for girls to be 35% of riders by 2033. In Southern California, GRiT runs through Golden State South, because the SoCal League is not a NICA league.
Mountain biking is also one of the sports where American women are winning right now. Kate Courtney came up through California’s high school league and won the 2018 world championship. Haley Batten won Olympic silver in Paris. Savilia Blunk won the 2026 national cross-country title.
Beyond the school league
Kids who want more racing usually add open USA Cycling races alongside their league season. The next step is a club or shop team that travels to bigger races, then a regional junior development team, then selection for national team camps and the junior world championships. At the very top, “factory” teams are pro teams paid for by a bike brand.
Gravity racers (enduro and downhill) follow a similar path through local races, then the enduro and gravity national championships, then the World Cup.
League details and dates come from the organizers’ published information for the 2026 and 2027 seasons. SoCal League fees are from the 2025–26 season. All of it changes every year, so check with the league or race before you register.
